How to change your sacrificial anode rod in hot water tank

How to change your anode rod in hot water tank

Simple maintenance can double the life of your Hot Water Service!

1. Turn off water and fuel supply (gas or electricity) to water heater.
2. Partially drain the water heater using the Pressure relief valve
3. Locate the anode rod on the water heater; usually located under a plastic lug or metal disc at the top of the hot water service.
4. Use a 20mm or 3/4 -inch deep socket to unscrew the anode rod from the Hot Water Service.
5. If the anode rod won’t budge, slip a steel pipe onto the socket handle for extra leverage.
6. Lift out and discard the old anode rod.
7. Wrap Teflon tape around thread of new anode rod; insert anode rod into water heater and tighten.
8. If limited space above the Hot Water Service prevents the installation of a standard anode rod, install a flexible type.
9. Turn on the water and fuel supply to the water heater.
10. Wait for the tank to reach temperature and check for leaks and replace the disc or lug.
